When thieves aren't looting your local jewellery store or trying to bag your catalytic converter, they'll try and get their hands on whatever they can find. And a Ruroc helmet is a prime target. But with these six methods of using a motorcycle helmet lock, you can prevent your lid from being lifted.

Using a motorcycle helmet lock for safety

Stopping your helmet from being stolen is the number one reason to lock it up, but it also helps you avoid any unnecessary damage. Hauling your helmet around a shop or cafe makes it susceptible to bumps, scrapes and scratches, deteriorating its overall safety.

Where to lock a helmet to a motorcycle

Regardless of how you lock your helmet, locking it in the wrong place can also damage its integrity. Avoid leaving your lid next to the fuel tank as the vapours can damage the liner. Having the padding of your helmet exposed to wet weather will also degrade the protective properties of your helmet. To avoid these issues, you could try a helmet lock bag.

Motorcycle helmet lock bag

A lockable helmet bag is a safe and secure place to store your helmet. It's essentially a waterproof bag with a built-in lock to keep your helmet and other essentials. Incredibly tough for criminals to break into, and a low-profile aesthetic further deters any chance of theft.

Helmet bags are a great way of storing and protecting your helmet, but because they're so bulky, you'll need extra space on your bike to store it. Their also a bit of a style killer when paired with a sports bike.

Bicycle locks

If you're just after a lock for your helmet, pushbike locks work great as motorcycle helmet locks. Using any hard point of your bike, like the wheel, pillion handle or handlebars, loop the lock cable through the chin bar to secure the helmet. Everything from heavy bike chains or lightweight Hiplock tie systems work perfectly.

Lightweight Hiplock tie systems are a great example and perfect for short stops or when you don’t have your bike in sight. Alternatively, you can use a heavy-duty bike chain for increased peace of mind.

Motorcycle Frame Locks

If you want a more specialised lock, try a frame lock. Individual manufacturers and specialist third-party operators design these locks to fit onto your bike, usually on the handlebars or under the seat. While extremely secure, frame locks only work with Double D-rings and can require some professional help to fit them. Plus if you change bike manufacturer, you’ll need a new lock installed.

Padlocks

Locks don’t always have to be specialised. A simple padlock can work just as well. Loop the shackle through your Double D ring buckle and a solid part of your bike and your set. Do note though, that this only works for helmets with a Double D fastener, and if a thief is determined, could cut the lock off.

How to lock a motorcycle helmet with your seat

If you want to save yourself the weight of a lock or helmet bag, you can use your seat to your advantage. You can clamp the helmet down by threading the D-ring buckle between the latch and closing the seat. However, not all seats can lift up and, with enough effort, could be pulled loose. Also, bear in mind that this method can damage your strap.

Motorcycle chains

The final method is to use a motorcycle chain. Usually used to secure a bike, it can also protect your helmet by threading it through the chin bar. The main drawback is that your helmet is on the floor, and likely to get kicked about.

The chains are also an expensive option compared to other locks out there. However, unless you've got an industrial-sized angle grinder, your helmet ain't going nowhere.
